Protect your brand: MyIPO trademark, domain and website security
Once people start recognising your brand, two things matter: others shouldn't be able to use your name freely, and your online shop should be secure. This guide covers both, practically.

Part 1: Trademark with MyIPO
- (Optional) Preliminary Advice & Search (TMA1): early advice from the Registrar. RM250 per class.
- Choose classes: there are 45 classes. One application can cover several, and fees are per class. List specific goods/services rather than just class headings.
- File (TMA2) online via MyIPO IP ONLINE, or manually:
- RM950 per class using the pre-approved list (TMA2A)
- RM1,100 per class with your own wording (TMA2B)
- Series marks: +RM50 per additional mark (TMA2C)
All under the Trademarks Act 2019. Check myipo.gov.my for processing times. We haven't verified them, so we don't quote them here.
Part 2: Reporting copycats on marketplaces
- TikTok Shop: the Intellectual Property Protection Center (IPPC). Register your IP asset (e.g. trademark certificate) and get it approved before filing complaints. The mark must be protected in the country you file for.
- Shopee: the Brand IP Portal requires an active registered trademark in that country, and the brand name must be visible on the products or packaging.
Part 3: Domain, handles and your website as the source of truth
- Secure your domain early (.my or .com.my) and turn on auto-renew.
- Keep handles consistent across IG, Threads, TikTok and FB.
- Make your website the official reference: prices, official WhatsApp, and official social accounts.
Part 4: Website security checklist
- SSL / https site-wide
- Strong passwords + 2FA on website admin, hosting and domain email
- WordPress, theme & plugin updates; remove unused plugins
- Regular off-server backups, with a tested restore
- A payment gateway that processes cards on its side, so card data isn't stored on your site
- Spam/bot protection on forms and checkout
- Separate staff roles with least access; no shared admin login
- Domain auto-renew + registrar lock

If you hold customer names, phone numbers or addresses, the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) applies. Its seven principles are General, Notice & Choice, Disclosure, Security, Retention, Data Integrity and Access. In practice: tell customers why you collect data, use it only for that purpose, keep it secure, don't keep it longer than needed, keep it accurate, and give customers access to it. Act 709 also has a data breach notification duty. Appointing a DPO is only mandatory above set thresholds (e.g. more than 20,000 data subjects). See pdp.gov.my.

Do I need a trademark to report copycats on TikTok Shop or Shopee? Generally yes. Both routes ask for a registered right.
Is SSL enough? No. You also need strong passwords, 2FA, updates, backups and proper roles.
Does PDPA apply to small shops? If you process personal data in commercial transactions, Act 709 applies. Check pdp.gov.my or an adviser.
Can PageKedai register my trademark? No. Please use a registered IP agent.
